NASA x RISD Rover Branding

NASA x RISD Rover

Meet RISD Rover, a university student-led club that's reaching for the stars alongside NASA. They're on a mission to pioneer groundbreaking space design, fuel student passions through education, and spark the cosmic curiosity in future generations.

What is the Rover?

The Rover is RISD's award-winning submission to NASA's H.E.R.C. (Human Exploration Rover Challenge). It is an 80 pound, man powered, two-person vehicle completely designed and fabricated by RISD students.

Design Challenge

To create the organization's first ever branding kit, we defined the following objectives:

• Showcase the club's affiliation with parent org. NASA
• Streamline the process of creating promotional materials
• Capitalize on and uphold existing brand recognition
• Strengthen the club's unique sense of identity and pride

Target Market

This redesign should resonate with design and engineering students, people from the general public who participate in RISD Rover events, and collaborating organizations.

Many of our early explorations played with the various parts of the Rover such as bike chain and its iconic carbon fiber wheels.

We were heavily inspired by historical imagery from NASA and referenced vintage Space Race designs. We wanted to emulate the rustic, humanistic feel of this past era while still keeping true to the club's own history.

After exploring many possible new logos, we opted to update the original combination mark to maintain the strong brand recognition of the organization.
